BELLE ISLE LOBSTER AND SEAFOOD

1 South Main Street
Winthrop, MA

Belle Isle is one of my favourite restaurants in Boston to get my lobster roll fix. The lobster roll is a little on the pricier side but it’s worth every penny. The seafood is always fresh and perfectly cooked. Belle Isle is located a few stops outside downtown Boston which is somewhat of a trek but easily accessible but the train.

Haddock with onion rings and chips, $14.99,  had a nice light batter without being too heavy or greasy. I really love Belle Isle’s coleslaw too.

The lobster roll is $23.99 and it comes with your choice of fries, onion rings, coleslaw or rice pilaf. The bun is nicely toasted and packed with fresh lobster meat both tail and claw. The lobster has a minimal coating of mayo and a squeeze of lemon juice, there are some lettuce for a crisp refreshing texture.

The crab cakes (not pictured), $13.99, were a little too salty for me. The plate comes with 3 large crab cakes, onion rings, fries and coleslaw.

Belle Isle renovated a few years ago from a dingy shack to a clean airy spacious restaurant with a beautiful view of Boston. Not only does Belle Isle sell cooked foods, they sell fresh seafood to take home.

MR. FISH & CHIPS

4361 Highway 7 | Markham, ON

Mr Fish & Chips has been around since I could ever remember, I have driven by plenty of times but I’ve only been here a couple of times. The inside is super dated and is plastered with fish posters and posters on the benefits of eating fish. This is a family run business cause I remember coming here quite a while back and the owner had his kids serving on roller skates (not the safest but got the job done).

Small menu but the only fish and chips joint I’ve seen serve Scottish meat pie, Haggis, and Black pudimealie (not quite sure what that is though). I would love to try haggis one day but I don’t think I have the guts to!

The view from where I was sitting. I’m not looking for anything fancy when I go to fish & chip joints but I think this place could use a little maker over or at least a little sprucing up.

My mom and I got one order of halibut and one order of cod and chips to share.  I really enjoy the the batter on the fish, incredibly light and crispy and my favourite part, is that the batter is this so you can actually enjoy the fish. The chips were also good, crisp, not greasy and perfect soft in the middle.

The mushy peas on the other hand were a little weird, not the normal mushy peas you would normally get. I wasn’t sure if I liked them or not but I managed to finish them.

Needless to say I’m still in the search for the best fish & chips in the GTA.

DANNY’S FISH & CHIPS

4721 Highway 7 | Markham, ON

I drive by Danny’s fish & chips all the time but the thought of going in never crossed my mind until last night when I was craving for something deep fried and greasy. Looking up different fish & chip joints near my house I decided on Danny’s.

We came around 7pm on a Friday night and the place was packed! To be honest I was a little shocked that it was that busy and we had to wait but not for too long.  Danny’s is a family run restaurant with the father and son on the fryers while the daughters served. I love family run businesses, something about them just makes me what to spend my money there more!

My mom and I decided to share so we can get more! No complaints from my mom since I offered to treat her to dinner.

My mom got the halibut & chips, $10.99, it came with one piece of fish and a mountain of fries…oops I mean chips. Everything was fried well, the fish was cooked perfectly and so were the chips but I tend to like my chips crispy so I wasn’t a big fan.

I got the shrimps, $11.49, I didn’t get chips cause I was going to eat my moms but I guess they threw in some cause my plate looked pretty empty. I came with packaged cocktail sauce (lame, I wished they made their own). The shrimp were great like really good, meaty and crispy but $12 for 7 shrimp? Kind of steep don’t you think?

How could we go to a fish & chips place without getting mushy peas?

These were really good, even my mom said so and she’s been to England plenty of times and has eaten plenty of fish & chips with mushy peas.

I liked Danny’s but I wouldn’t say they have the best fish & chips in town so I guess my search isn’t over yet.
