HELLO DARLING

827 Lansdowne Ave | Toronto, ON
https://www.facebook.com/hellodarlingcafe

Looking for a new brunch joint? Hello Darling opened it’s doors the beginning of this year, the interior is quite quaint, friendly and welcoming. I love the simple decor here with the mismatched cups and plates and fresh flowers on each table.

Everyone got either coffee or tea, I opted to get the Rhubarb & Ginger Soda. It was not too sweet and really refreshing, not as much rhubarb flavour as I wanted though.

The menu changes daily with their menu hand written on their black board.

Everything is is made in house and they source their protein from Rowe Farms which is awesome knowing where the products are actually from.

My sister and my boyfriend both got the Huevos Rancheros served with fried eggs, mixed peppers, rice & beans, pico de gallo, avocado, purple slaw and Mexican cheese. This isn’t your stereotypical huevos rancheros, super light and healthy version.

Chris got the Apple Cake French Toast,  served with rum raisins, maple syrup and whipped cream (opted out).

My mom got the Eggs Any Style which is served with hash brown, toast, light salad and fruit. No complaints but also nothing very fancy.

I got the Roasted Vegetables with poached eggs, butternut squash, parsnips, sweet potato, fennel, pita za’atar, white bean hummus & kale chips. I really loved my dish, it was healthy, light but also very substantial. All the different textures made up for the lack of meat.

I would highly recommend checking out Hello Darling if you’re looking for a vegetarian and vegan friendly meal but also very satisfying for meat eaters alike.
The wait time for food is a little longer than usual but the food and service make up for that.

LE CAFE MICHI

1802 Pharmacy Avenue | Toronto, ON

Cafe Michi is somewhat hidden, located in a little plaza in Scarborough, you would never think such a small hidden restaurant serves up such fresh and delicious sushi. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Cafe Michi but when my mom’s Japanese friend recommended even she was eager to try it. Cafe Michi is the sister restaurant of the famous Kaji restaurant in Mississauga, supposedly Kaji trained the sushi chef here.

I knew I was going to order something with sashimi or sushi, as I scanned the menu everything seemed to be a bit pricy but luckily I was with my mom (bank of mommy)! Both my mom and I got the Chirashi, $28, but it comes with salad, tea or coffee and a slice of cake!

The combination of seafood seems to be quite ordinary but the quality of fish was so fresh, everything was sweet and melted in my mouth. My favourites were probably the scallop, snapper (which I usually hate) and salmon. It doesn’t seem like a lot of food but after the cake I was stuffed.

My cousin got Chyu-chin Bento, $23. It came in a 3 tier bowl. On top was the karaage (fried chicken) in a peanuty sauce (words of my cousin). 2nd layer was 2 pieces of some of the best red snapper, salmon and tuna. In the final contained a bowl of unagi (eel) on a bed of rice.

He’s a big foodie and he definitely approved.

My uncle for the Pork Katsu Curry,  there was a choice between regular and large but he just got the regular.  I didn’t get to try any but no words came out of his mouth while he ate which means one thing, too good to take a break to talk.

My aunt the Seafood Udon, she said it wasn’t anything special.

All the meals also came with your choice of cake, we got to choose from 6 different flavours.
I got the tofu cheesecake and both my cousin and I thought it was the best cake choice out of all three. Smooth, silky and light.

This one was the green tea with red bean, this one was good and full of delicious green tea flavour.

Lastly was the sake chocolate cake, this one was my least favourite cake mostly because I’m not a fan of alcohol.

Le Cafe Michi is definitely worth trying, more expensive compared to most Japanese restaurants but you pay for what you get, The quality of the food is superb. I would rather eat less mediocre Japanese food and save up for expensive but delicious sushi.

THE WEDDING CAKE SHOPPE

859 College Street | Toronto, ON
https://theweddingcakeshoppe.com/

As a baker, I’ve always wanted to visit The Wedding Cake Shoppe but I never had the chance because it’s so far from home. But this past Friday everything changed, I received a tweet from @weddingcakeshop telling me I won 6 cupcakes by just following them. Yup, every week they give out 6 cupcakes to one of their followers, how great is that?!

I love the mismatched tables and the cute frilly light fixture, somewhat simple in decor to show off all the products & cakes. When I arrived around 1pm there was about 8 – 10 flavours to choose from and the girl that served me was super nice and patient while i tried to figure out which ones i wanted.

In the end I ended up with these flavours, from top left going clockwise: red velvet, passion fruit, dulce de leche, raspberry rapture, baked raspberry cream cheese & carrot cake.

I have to saw these have been hands down the best cupcakes I’ve ever had, my favourite was the carrot cake. I’m normally a sucker for carrot cake but this one was super moist, light, fluffy and not too cinnamon-y. The cream cheese frosting was really good too, not too sweet.
But seriously. All the cupcakes were really good and I would recommend everyone to make a trip down to The Wedding Cake shoppe.

Japanese Strawberry Shortcake

I made a cake last week to for a long needed fam jam, I didn’t want to make anything to extravagant or anything too sweet so decided on something simple like strawberry short cake.

Here’s the recipe here!
I only have 9″ pans and it worked great, next time I would double the recipe to get 4 layers (2 cakes cut in half).

The sponge was light and moist, I didn’t even need to use a simple syrup.

Here are some step-by-step picture instruction on how I assembled the cake.

1. firstly, I cut the cake in half and spread some strawberry jam on the bottom. Considering that strawberries aren’t really in season, I bumped up the strawberry flavour with jam.

2.  Spread a thin layer of sweetened whipped cream on the bottom, fill with sliced strawberries then spread another thin layer of cream on top on the strawberries. This helps both layers stick together.

3. Top with the other half of cake and mask with the whipped cream.

Making it all smooth.

4. Decorate accordingly.

This recipe is a definite winner and will probably use the sponge recipe over and over again!
