IPPAI

I tend to come here when I have a ramen craving, I did a post of about Ippai awhile back. Not only do they have good ramen, their sashimi is pretty fresh too.

All the different ramen combinations you can get, you can also create your own though.

My mom got the tenderous rib ramen, the broth was flavourful and the ribs were really good; tender and packed full of yummy goodness.

I got curry ramen which had pork cutlet, deep-fried imitation crab meat & veggies. I like how the broth had curry flavour but wasn’t over-powering. I wish the pork cutlet came on a separate plate to keep the crispy coating from being soggy but I love deep-fried imitation crab meat, so good.

I would definitely recommend getting ramen or sushi, nothing else.

NEW CITY RESTAURANT

8392 Kennedy Road | Markham, ON

I’ve been coming here for a long time now, it’s basically our go to place if we want Hong Kong style diner/café food; weather it be breakfast, lunch, snack or dinner. My family comes here so often that they know us on a first name basis and my mom and uncle know the waitress’ names too. There’s usually a wait during breakfast and lunch time but don’t fret, the wait goes by pretty quick.

They renovated the interior a few years ago and I must say it was definitely in need of one, it’s more modern and bright now.

Today we gathered here for some afternoon tea, afternoon tea starts at 2:30pm. I had a little snack before hand so I didn’t want anything too big; and I figured that eating a deep-fried pork chop fit the bill (I’m being sarcastic if you didn’t catch it). Weridly enough everyone else got fish balls in noodle soup.

My pork was super moist on the instead with a super crispy crust, just the way I like it. Get the fries, not a fan of their salad.

I’ve practically have had everything (everything that I would actually eat) on the menu and I don’t think I’ve ever been disappointed. The portions are huge and the prices are good; I usually can’t finish a meal by myself so I’m set for the next day’s lunch. I would definitely recommend the Hong Kong style french toast which is totally different from the normal french toast that might come to mind. They take two extra thick slices of bread, smear some peanut butter in the middle, dip it in egg, fry it and it’s served with a giant slice of butter and syrup; heaven. Don’t want something sweet? Try their egg sandwich or their baked pork chop fried rice in tomato sauce. The list can go on but I’ll just let you head over there to try out it yourself.

Hung Fook Tong

505 Highway 7 E,

Thornhill, ON

www.hungfooktong.com

One friday night I found myself here with Jess and Matt, I wasn’t really feeling bubble tea which is what we usually do post dinner get together so Jess suggested Chinese desserts. Hung Fook Tong is a Hong Kong company that manufactures bottled herbal drinks and packaged desserts (yea, I googled that). They have three different locations all around GTA but we ended up at the one closest to us. The menu is packed with pictures for people like me who can’t read Chinese and won’t know what “black glutinous rice porridge” is.

Matt got mango pudding which is the LEAST adventurous thing he could have gotten. I had a bite and it was alright, honestly I think I could have made a better one myself.

Jess got black glutinous rice with mango topping.

Mango supreme is a bowl containing mango cubes, in fresh mango juice with simple syrup and tiny tapioca grains and topped with pieces of Chinese grapefruit. The first time I had this I was in HongKong and it was so good I can still remember it and I still haven’t anything compared to how good it is in Hong Kong.

We also got a steamed rice noodle roll to share, if you’ve never had this it’s a thin sheet of rice noodle rolled up that’s steamed and usually eat during dim sum and it can be stuff with a variety of meats or shrimp or just eaten plain. It’s usually served with soy sauce and you dip it in hoisin sauce and sesame sauce. It was piping hot when we got it and we even let it cool down for about 10 minutes and it was still hot!

I probably wouldn’t recommend this Chinese dessert place because I prefer the one at Peach Tree Centre, I forgot the name but I definitely like that one better.

ANGELS GATE WINERY

4260 Mountainview Road | Beamsville, ON
http://www.angelsgatewinery.com

After the wedding we took the family to Niagara to do some sightseeing and some wine tasting. I’ve been to Niagara falls plenty of times but I’ve never been to a wine tasting at a winery so I was pretty excited. But I was probably most excited about having lunch there!

The tour was great and all but lunch was fantastic! For lunch you could choose between three different meals. We ordered all three and each plate is meant to be shared by two people.

We started off with Canadian artisanal cheeses with

fresh fruit, I love cheese and these cheeses were great!

This first plate is “Bench Tour” which is composed of Ontario Lamb Loin “Chop” with basil horseradish. Beets in a phyllo package and wax beans, red onion in a

goat cheese dressing and two pickerel fillet with a caraway bell pepper puree.

I’m not a lamb fan but the lamb was amazing and the basil sauce made it taste even better! The fish was super crispy and moist but the phyllo beet package wasn’t anything special.

This one is that “Assiette du Québec” plate, it consisted of pan-seared duck Magret with a blueberry gastrique. A shallot maple vinaigrette with roasted sea scallops. Cucumbers with a dll crème fraîche ‘aioli’ and a mini tourtière. I’m not a big fan of duck because of the gamey-ness but I tried a piece anyways. As expected I didn’t have anymore duck after that one piece. The scallops on the other hand were perfectly cooked, so delicious.

Third plate was called “East Coast Tasting Plate”. There was a lobster salad with citrus and mint dressing topped with an oven-dried tomato. A medley of potatoes and radish and a creamy herb dressing. For the main there was a pork tenderloin with molasses and Merlot reduction. The forest mushrooms spend on toast was SO good, my boyfriend that doesn’t even like mushrooms had two pieces!

This is most of my family plus some of the boyfriends.

J-Town: Cafe Green Tea

Cafe Green Tea
3160 Steeles Ave E
Markham, ON

I had a little mishap with my car last weekend and had to take it to the dealership to get fixed. Satya and I got there at around 11:30am to drop off the car and the mechanic said it would take about 2.5 hours, oh great! I decided to take Satya to J-Town which is literally a 2 minutes walk from the dealership to just look around.
J-Town is the largest Japanese shopping mall in the GTA, it isn’t even that big though compared to a normal T&T supermarket. It the “mall” there’s a bakery, a cafe, a meat section, seafood/sushi/sashimi section, grocery store and a shop that sells random things. As soon as you walk in, you get a waft of fresh baked sweet bread! Instantly your mouth starts watering!
I LOVE the sashimi here, it’s always SO fresh and reasonably priced. We decided to grab lunch there cause I was feeling a bit peckish.
We went to the little cafe, which I’ve never been to but everything on the menu looked so good!, I was going to get udon and Satya said he was going to get the curry but some how convinced me to get the curry and I some how convinced him to get something else.

After you order, you get a number and you sit down and they bring you your food.

So I got the curry with bread chicken. I’m so glad I did cause it was awesome! Not too salty, just the right amount of sauce to rice ratio and the chicken was super crispy!

As I’m typing this, my mouth is watering…I could really go for some right about now!

Satya got the yaki-udon, I don’t think he like it that much cause the whole time he was eying my food and actually finished off the rest of mine. I didn’t really like the flavour of his dish but the udon was so well cooked, it was perfectly cooked; still chewy and not mushy.

Probably wouldn’t get this again cause the curry was just SO good!

Everyone should get their behinds to J-Town not only for the food but the have all your Japanese cooking essentials and super fresh fish and great raisin bread!

SALAD KING

340 Yonge Street (2nd Floor) | Toronto, ON
http://www.saladking.com/

Last Saturday Cherry, Kevin, Jon and I went all the way downtown to eat dinner (it’s a long story but I’m glad we did!). Last time I was at there, one side of the building’s wall crumbled and fell right off…needless to say, I got free lunch that day! I haven’t been back to Salad King since then (more then a year ago) and now they have a new location right across the street from the old location! We we trying to look for it and we walked right by it; maybe it’s cause it’s located on the 2nd floor and you don’t really notice the door or maybe we just didn’t really have directions. The new decorations are really gorgeous and instead of just having cafeteria style seating, they now have booths which I think is a super smart decisions considering now you can bring your little ones or at least get some more privacy.

Cherry had the phud thai (pad thai), I only had a bite and it was good! She ate the whole bowl and I didn’t hear any complaints (about her food…) from her!

I had the Seafood fried rice which was packed full of flavour and seafood (shrimp, squid, mussel, shallot, egg, crab sauce)! I think I always order this when I visit…not sure why though cause they have AMAZING curry too!

Jon had hot chicken with cashew, I didn’t have any but he ate it all…he either liked it or he was really hungry! Kevin had the Seafood Soup, I’m not sure if he liked it or not cause he didn’t really say anything about it.

I really like Salad King and definitely would recommend coming here for a cheap fast meal!

Gal’s Sushi

Not going to type a lot on how much I love Gal’s considering I already did so…

I went back to Gal’s for my weekly sushi fix with my sister and Chris, I usually order a sushi and maki roll platter to share but I always get either the tempera lobster or the lobster salad roll!

Lobster Salad Roll (Lobster salad on a dynamite roll) for $10.99, this is a must try!

WAGAMAMA

Faneuil Hall
http://www.wagamama.com/

We came here for lunch cause Satya loves this place. It’s cafeteria style seating so you can basically hear your neighbour’s whole conversation (just like salad king in Toronto).

Wagamama has daily flavoured unsweetened iced teas, I think he either had tropical or mango that day. I had the melon fruit juice which had apple, orange, and watermelon.

Satya had the chicken katsu curry. Deep-fried chicken breast, served with a light curry sauce and sticky rice. Garnished with a combination of mixed leaves and red pickles. Which was REALLY good.
I had the ginger chicken udon which had chicken marinated in ginger, garlic and lemongrass. served with snow peas, red onion, bean sprouts, chili, egg and scallion. Garnished with pickled red ginger and cilantro (just stole the description off the website). Mine was just mediocre, nothing that special.

MIKE’S PASTRY

300 Hanover Street | Boston, MA
http://www.mikespastry.com/

Mike’s pastry is famous for their traditional Italian pastries and cookies but my only goal is to consume their lobster tails a.k.a La Sfogliatella.

A super crispy and flaky crust with a creamy sweet ricotta filling. oh my. SO good, just ask Satya it’s probably one of the only things we agree on.

Satya and I came back on a Saturday night because I promised his sister I would bring her back something. The line went out the door and around the corner but you know you’re in for a treat when the line is THAT long and luckily Mike’s only accept cash so the line went by pretty fast.

If you’re in Boston, Mike’s Pastry is a must go and you MUST try a lobster tail!

FANEUIL HALL MARKETPLACE

Quincy Market
33 Washington Street, MA

One of my favourite places in Boston, I made Satya take me here almost everyday for a whole week. It gets super crowded during lunch and on the weekends and I know they sell over priced goodies but how could anyone not love a market full of food stalls?!

This was taken early afternoon before the lunch rush.

Fried whole clams with tartar sauce. I honestly don’t remember the name of stall where I got these fried clams from, it was either Boston and Maine Fish Co. or Fishermans Net. they were kind of greasy and kind of chewy…I don’t think I would get these again. Or maybe it was because we ate lunch 20 minutes before and I was stuffed…

Oh good gracious! I LOVE clam chowder! Clam Chowder Co. is a franchise in Boston but it’s still so good, a bowl full of clams and creamy-potatoy-goodness!
